Cutting
The term cutting refers to the act of separating one cow from a herd of cattle. Cattle are herd animals and instinctively try to return to the group. Knowing that, a horse and rider team will quietly ride into the herd, select and “cut” off, or separate, one cow from the group (letting the unpicked cows return to the herd behind) and then prevent that cow from rejoining the herd. Keeping the cow separated requires incredible intelligence and physical ability on the part of the horse. Once the cow is separated, riders are no longer allowed to use their reins. Trained cutting horses are required to think on their own and anticipate and react to the cow’s moves. The competition is judged based on many factors—difficulty and how well the horse anticipates and reacts. This is the only equine competition where the horse is required to think for itself.

Directions
Head north on CA-99 towards Sacramento for 27 miles. Take Exit 281 for Dillard Rd and turn right on Dillard Rd. In 14 miles, turn right onto Jackson Rd/Hwy 16. At the stoplight, turn right onto Murieta Drive. Take your first right onto Lone Pine Drive.
From Hwy 50, take Exit 27 for Scott Rd/ E Bidwell St and head south on Scott Rd. At the 3 way stop, turn right onto White Rock Rd. In 1.5 miles, turn left onto Scott Rd (if you reach Prairie City Rd you have gone to far). Stay on Scott Rd for 7.9 miles then make a sharp left onto Latrobe Rd. Take the first right onto Stone House Rd until you reach Jackson Rd/Hwy 16. Turn left onto Jackson Rd and take the 1stright at the stoplight on Murieta Drive. Take your first right onto Lone Pine Drive.

Go southwest on CA- 49 towards Empire St and continue on CA- 49. In 2 miles, stay straight onto CA-16 for 13.65 miles. At the stoplight, turn left onto Murieta Dr. Take your first right onto Lone Pine Drive.
